Labyrinth Manga 1
Currently reading Labryinth manga, courtesy of Cristin.

It’s really lovely. You know how you want to read more Harry Potter, but you don’t want to read fanfic or some lame substitute for the real thing? Well, Labyrinth is sacred ground. You wouldn’t want to see a Labyrinth II so much, would you? OK, if we’re being honest here what you really want to see is if what should have happened did happen, but that’ll never happen so… meh.
My point is that this is really good! It’s a lovely continuation from the perfect point of view and with all the little added touches that long-time fans will want to see. I finished Vol. 1 last night and I’m reading Vol. 2 now. Thanks, Cristin!
Labyrinth Manga 2

Labyrinth

Members of the “David Bowie’s spandex in Labyrinth shaped my childhood” Facebook group know what it’s all about. As do Cristin’s boobs! 🙂

Labyrinth Boobs

Fun Jenny came over to Cristin’s tonight to watch Labryinth for the first time ever! It was fun to watch with Cristin, who has watched this movie more times than she can count. Cristin made yummy dip which we devoured, and had some fabulous cookies that were reminiscent of cupcakes.

Cristin and I geeked out and loved every minute of it. Jenny liked it, too, but I think that she was also having a good time chuckling at us.
Labyrinth Evidence

Ha!!

I did it! Go to www.iheartdavids.com. First props go to my favorite Dave. Then there’s my second favorite David.

Read this post to understand why I did it.

Control

From the David Bowie news page. I am kind of totally psyched about this. Maybe the album more so than the movie. Conjures up nostalgic memories of my dark, depressed high school days…

If I Can’t Control My Destiny

Like many of the musicians of his generation (and beyond) with anything worth saying, Ian Curtis, late singer of Joy Division and subject of new movie, Control, was clearly a huge fan of the work of David Bowie.

The Control OST album, due via Warner on October 3rd, includes three Bowie compositions: Iggy Pop‘s version of Sister Midnight (Bowie/Pop/Alomar) and two Bowie originals: Drive In Saturday (Bowie) and Warszawa (Bowie/Eno).

In fact, Warszawa was the track that inspired Joy Division’s first name, Warsaw.

Additionally, the film itself utilises The Jean Genie to superb effect (please excuse low quality grab below) when the teenage Curtis is shown miming barechested to the song in front of his bedroom mirror.

Curtis, who hanged himself aged 23 in May 1980 while The Idiot played on his turntable, is portrayed brilliantly throughout the film by actor Sam Riley. Likewise, the lonely figure of the tragic singer’s wife, Deborah Curtis, played by Samantha Morton.

Control is the feature length debut of photographer/director Anton Corbijn who was responsible for the best known and more memorable images of Ian Curtis and Joy Division…and he’s taken some pretty impressive pictures of David Bowie too, for that matter.

I’ll leave you with the tracklisting for the Control OST album, which is just about as cool as the movie that The Independent newspaper has already dubbed “The coolest British movie of 2007”.

  1. Exit – New Order
  2. What Goes On – The Velvet Underground + Ian Dialogue
  3. Shadowplay (Joy Division cover) – The Killers
  4. Boredom (Live) – The Buzzcocks
  5. Dead Souls – Joy Division + Rain, Beginning of Dialogue
  6. End of Dialogue + She Was Naked – Supersister

  8. Love Will Tear Us Apart – Joy Division
  9. Problems (Live) – Sex Pistols
  10. Bernard/Ian Dialogue + Hypnosis – New Order + Ian Dialogue
  11. Drive In Saturday – David Bowie
  12. Evidently Chickentown – John Cooper Clarke
  13. 2HB – Roxy Music
  14. TV Dialogue + Transmission (Cast Version) – Joy Division
  15. Car Noises + Autobahn – Kraftwerk
  16. Ian/Debbie Dialogue + Atmosphere – Joy Division

UPDATE
This cover from the Ziggy Stardust Cover Contest really shows how the cover relates to the scene now. Apologies for not giving props to whoever created this – it’s not listed on the site that I could fine. Hi-C, thanks for pointing this out to me!!
Ziggy Cover Mod

So, while in England Alba and I visited the site where the photo for the cover of the Ziggy Stardust album was taken.

Here is the original.
Ziggy Album

It took us a bit of time to find it. We were wandering around holding the picture above, squinting at all the building facades, when a helpful passerby said “It’s over there.” I think he worked there and must have been used to seeing people hunt for this landmark.

This is from the end of the street. You can see the site on the right-hand side of the street. On the building at the end of the street (which is The Living Room), note the wood framing over the first floor and the side-by-side rectangular windows at the top of the building. You can see those very clearly in the album cover. Strangely enough, what Graham told me didn’t really jibe with what we saw – the site does not really appear to be part of the building that houses The Living Room.

Ziggy_site1_thumb

Here is a sideway view of the building, looking to the right corner. It’s not clear which doorway the picture was taken from.

Ziggy_site3_thumb

Looking down the street from the far corner of the building. The picture was taken further down the building, but all of the markers, the light, the K.West sign, the boxes, are all gone.

Ziggy_site2_thumb

So, we found it! With the restaurants that lined the entire street all filled with patrons, it was impossible to get in to the actual site, but we got close!! It was fun to have a mission to accomplish, and satisfying to have accomplished it. I probably should have taken more pictures, but I’m happy with what I got.

“You got a toothbrush? We’re going to London. Do you hear that, Doug? I’m coming to London!”  (NSFW)

Remember that soundbite from the Snatch sountrack? Well, it’s true!! I’m going to visit my BFF Alba, who is from Colombia but is visiting Cambridge for a summer research program.

We are going to be spending two nights in Cambridge and two in London.

The one thing I want to accomplish while I’m there, besides QFT with Alba? I was inspired by Cristin’s Bowie album cover recreation. Now, I don’t have the mad skillz she possesses, but I will be in London so I want to revisit the site of the Ziggy Stardust album cover.

Wednesday night The Colony movie theatre showed an original copy of The Dark Crystal. The print had lots of pops and haze in it, it was definitely an old, old copy of the movie. They even had a vintage movie poster on display, check it! Cristin decided to go with me, after agonizing over the decision. We posed in front of the poster but the stoned guy taking our picture couldn’t figure out how to focus…grumble.
But damn, aren’t we cute?!
We met for burgers and fries at Pharaoh’s before heading to the movie. I so so enjoyed meeting Cristin! She’s awesome and she loves David just as much as I do! (I’m sure Matt’s middle name is David.) We had a great time talking over dinner, and it was very relaxed and natural. The conversation flowed easily. This is the best you can get when meeting an internet friend for the first time. Yay!!! But I was totally surprised at how wee she is – look, she’s smaller than me! That just makes her more adorable. She is really too cute.

Attention Jackson Publick: I may have found the Venture Bros. original house! These enormous, insane carpets line the walls of the Colony’s movie theatre. How retro can you get? I’m sure that Rusty would think they’re so fab!

I think we should also note that the Colony serves beer! which makes it all the more fun. I can tell you that I’ll be there in November to see V for Vendetta a fourth time in the theatre. (Also this.)

Here’s us in front of the marquee. See, proof that they really were showing The Dark Crystal! You can see more pictures at Cristin’s post.

I liked the movie. I still think it’s too creepy and macabre for youngsters, and I think I was probably too young when I watched, but I liked it. And I think I know now why my brother liked it so much. I think it was the utter imagination of the whole thing, and the ballsy-ness it took to make a somewhat dramatic movie using no live actors.

I thought that the inspirations for many of the creatures were found in nature. Cristin says the Podlings were based on potatoes! The Garthim seem very much like more-mobile horseshoe crabs. There were many creatures (plants or animals, I don’t know) that seemed very inspired by coral reef denizens: the little delicate ferns that would withdraw at the slightest touch, the anemone that scuttle out of the way on the cliffside. I’d love to hear/read more on that topic.

Anyway, it was super enjoyable and I had a super great time. Yay for new friends and old movies!

That’s Hot!

I’ve been drinking, so what an appropriate time to post this picture of me looking hot in my latest Bowie shirt!

This concert sounds amazing. Jealous doesn’t even begin to describe it.
